Student conduct records are maintained by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards and are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Student conduct records are typically maintained for ten (10) years. Matters that result in suspension and expulsion are maintained permanently.
Please note that all student conduct incidents, whether it be within Residential Life, Academic Integrity, Student Groups and/or referred to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (OSCCS), are considered as part of the students’ conduct record with the university. See the Student Conduct Code Violation Reporting Policy.
OSCCS will provide information that is requested by WashU offices who inquire about a student’s conduct record in accordance with FERPA.
For students with student conduct records, OSCCS reports cases where a student has been found responsible.
Important considerations
Below are some important things to consider, when answering application questions regarding your student conduct record.
See the Student Conduct Code Violation Reporting Policy for additional information on Student Conduct Code violations. If there were matters handled by offices outside of OSCCS, those may be reported as well but are not within the jurisdiction of OSCCS.
Yes, most likely. Schools may ask you, as the applicant, to report your own student conduct history, and they may also send a form to OSCCS asking OSCCS to report your student conduct history.
Internally, a request of your student conduct record may be done for reasons including, but not limited to: (a) leadership positions, (b) student employment, (c) study abroad, (d) internships and (e) scholarship applications.
For external requests, please see the Student Conduct Code Violation Reporting Policy.
While we cannot provide specific guidance of how to respond, we encourage you to be honest and truthful regarding the incident(s) in question when answering the questions asked. Failing to report or omitting requested information can have adverse effects. For example, schools have the ability to revoke scholarships or offers of admissions. Schools and employers may contact WashU to verify that what you reported is accurate. For additional questions, please contact OSCCS.
It is quite possible that you have a continuing obligation to update your response to your institutions throughout the application process. Failing to do so may result in action being taken by the institution to which you are applying.
Please allow 15 business days for any requests to be processed. In some cases, it may be necessary for you to meet with a student conduct administrator before any information about your student conduct record is released.
